Leticia Vasquez-Wilson Submits Signatures to Qualify for Special Election in 33rd Senate District
LYNWOOD, Calif. – Following her end-of-year announcement that she would be running as a candidate for the 33rd State Senate District to replace California Insurance Commissioner Ricardo Lara, Leticia Vasquez-Wilson announced Tuesday that she’d submitted over 250 signatures of registered voters in the district to qualify her for the ballot.
“The political will is out there,” said Vasquez-Wilson. “The people are tired of their representatives sitting in back rooms, making deals and passing around elected positions like inherited royal titles from one to the next. Throughout my career, I have worked across all of the 33rd Senate District and I’ve built a diverse coalition of supporters ready and excited to help move this district forward out of the cutched of political elites and career politicians.”
She added, “I’m going to focus on the biggest issues facing the people of the 33rd–new and better jobs that pay living wages, advancing human and civil rights for immigrants, people of color, women, the LGBTQ community and all communities adversely impacted by unfair and unjust institutional racism and discrimination, affordable housing, clean air and water, reforming our criminal justice system and Medicare for all because health care is a human right and not a privilege.”
Vasquez-Wilson is currently elected to the Central Basin Municipal Water District board of directors representing its fourth district. In 2005, Vasquez-Wilson made history Lynwood’s first Latina mayor. During her tenure, she led an aggressive lobbying effort that brought in millions of dollars for new parks, schools, housing, shopping centers, streets, and a new state-of-the-art senior citizen center.
