Big Oil is trying to buy this election
Chevron, Valero, Tesoro, Occidental and the California Resource Corporation aka Big Oil just dropped over $1 million dollars to elect Lena Gonzalez to the State Senate.
From TV ads to billboards, Big Oil wants to make sure they have someone in the State Senate whose vote they can depend on.
As reported in the Long Beach Press-Telegram this week, “It’s natural for opponents to try to turn Gonzalez’s advantages into disadvantages, and tying her to big oil could damage her in a Southeast L.A. district afflicted by pollution, said retired Cal State L.A. political scientist Jaime Regalado.
“It taints the candidate,” said Regalado, who said the oil-company support could raise doubts about her sincerity about dealing with environmental issues such as climate change.”
Sacramento’s Around the Capitol added, “The ‘Coalition to Restore California’s Middle Class, Including Energy Companies Who Produce Gas, Oil, Jobs and Pay Taxes’ is playing bigly in the special election to fill Ricardo Lara’s former State Senate seat. As of yesterday, the independent expenditure committee has spent $1,052,987.83 in support of Long Beach councilwoman Lenz Gonzalez.
Leticia Vasquez Wilson has spent her entire life working for the residents of the 33rd Senate District. Leticia doesn’t believe that elected positions are handed down like royal titles. She believes that you have to earn being elected.
Leticia believes that voters are the most important part of the election–not Big Oil’s money.
Don’t let Big Oil buy the 33rd State Senate District!
Our environment matters. Climate change matters. Pollution matters. And most importantly–our communities and families matter more than money from Big Oil.
