Progressive Democratic Clubs Choose Leticia Vasquez Wilson for Senate District 33

Long Beach and Whittier Dem Clubs Go with Progressive Democrat for State Senate Seat

LONG BEACH, CA — Leticia Vasquez Wilson’s campaign for the 33rd State Senate District today announced the endorsements of Whittier’s Mark Twain Democratic Club and the YES WE CAN Democratic Club of Long Beach. Both clubs have been instrumental in helping to elect candidates to local, state and national office.  In addition to securing the endorsements of these two clubs, the California Democratic Party has decided to not make an endorsement of the nine candidates on the ballot for the special election taking place on March 26 to replace Ricardo Lara, who was elected Insurance Commissioner.

“The YES WE CAN Democratic Club believes the most important issue facing us all is getting money out of politics,” said Chris Robson, President of the YES WE CAN Democratic Club.  “Until that happens we won’t get a ban on fracking, we won’t get universal healthcare and we won’t get a tuition-free college education. Californians deserve to know who is trying to influence their votes with dark money given to candidates who are then beholden to them and not the voters.”

Robson added, “We support Leticia Vasquez Wilson for the 33rd Senate District because she understands this reality and even though she’s previously been an elected official, she does not take ‘soft’ or ‘dark’ money from special interests. Leticia runs clean campaigns and she believes in publicly-financed elections in addition to all the progressive issues that most of us grassroots activists support.”

“Leticia understands the most important qualities that a leader needs today,” remarked Barbara Rapisarda, President of the Mark Twain Democratic Club.  “She is responsible, she has a plan and she is committed to progressive reform including supporting affordable healthcare, improved veterans care, and addressing our most climate change issues.  The residents of the 33rd Senate District deserve a leader like Leticia.”

“I want to thank the YES WE CAN and Mark Twain Democratic Clubs for their endorsement and influential support,” said Vasquez Wilson. “As your senator, I will continue to fight for the issues that we believe in. I have never shied away from fighting for what’s right and fair and that won’t change after I’m elected.  Affordable healthcare, housing, civil and human rights, our environment–are all issues that progressives care about. I will remain committed to building a California that supports all working families and for providing bold solutions for the problems that they face.”

Elected to the Central Basin Municipal Water District in June 2012, Leticia Vasquez Wilson currently represents the cities and communities of Lynwood, South Gate, Florence-Graham, Willowbrook, Compton and Carson. She also serves on the executive committee of the Metropolitan Water District where she was the first woman to represent Central Basin in that organization.  In 2005, Vasquez Wilson made history as Lynwood’s first Latina mayor. During her tenure, she led an aggressive lobbying effort that brought in millions of dollars for new parks, schools, housing, shopping centers, streets, and a new state-of-the-art senior citizen center.

The 33rd Senate District includes the Los Angeles County cities and communities of Cudahy, Bell, Bell Gardens, Lynwood, Maywood, Signal Hill, Paramount, South Gate, Vernon, Walnut Park, Huntington Park, and most of Long Beach with portions of the cities of Lakewood and Los Angeles to achieve population equality.
